In August of 2005, Richard Barnes became the first person from the state of Utah to successfully swim the English Channel. Known as the Mount Everest of swimming, Richard Barnes entered an elite group of swimmers who have successfully made the 21 mile crossing. Out of thousands of attempts, only approximately 700 people have completed the swim, less than half of the number of people who have climbed Mt. Everest. Because of the difficulty of the sea and weather conditions on the day he swam, he was awarded the Greatest Feat of Endurance award for 2005 by the Channel Swimming Association.
Mr. Barnes is fluent in the Micronesian language Palauan, after living on the small Pacific island for two years. Richard also attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate degree where he majored in English and received an academic scholarship as well as an athletic scholarship for swimming. Richard was the Captain of the Men's Swimming Team at BYU and received awards for Outstanding Academic Achievement for Scholar Athletes, Academic All WAC, and placed as high as first and second in the Western Athletic Conference Swimming Championships.
Richard was born in Long Beach California, but grew up in the Salt Lake area since the third grade. In his free time, he enjoys swimming, biking, skiing, reading, and spending time with his wife and five children.
